BUAK

Social partnership

BUAK is one of Austria’s oldest social partnership institutions.

The Austrian Economic and Social Partnership refers to the cooperation of stakeholder organisations for employers (Chamber of Agriculture, Economic Chamber) and employees (Chamber of Labour, Austrian Federation of Trade Unions) with each other and with the government.

This social partnership is guided by the principle of achieving acceptable solutions in economic and social questions for all parties through consensus, and of keeping potential conflicts in check.

Whenever possible, the cooperation of these stakeholder organisations is not governed by law, but functions on a voluntary basis.

The social partnership had already begun to develop during the interwar period. It acquired its current function in the 1950s.

It is considered a key factor in Austria’s remarkable degree of social harmony and for the low number of strikes, and was the basis for economic growth after the Second World War.
